Zelnick’s Views on Retrocompatibility in Future Consoles
During the same conversation where he defended the price of these new versions of the 2010 classic, Zelnick was asked if he believes retrocompatibility is an important feature for upcoming consoles. He expressed no doubt that it will be included, but does not feel it is a mandatory aspect.
Zelnick stated that retrocompatibility “is a benefit for consumers and I would be surprised if platforms did not offer it with the mid-cycle improvement, however, I am not sure it is mandatory.”
When questioned if the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be included in the list of mid-generation consoles, Zelnick responded, “we do not know yet.” Considering how important retrocompatibility is for the Nintendo Switch community, something that is expected to be a highlight when Nintendo announces the new machine, Zelnick’s response is intriguing.
