Johann Pilestedt’s Views on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Game Development
Johann Pilestedt, the creative director of Helldivers 2, recently engaged in a conversation with a fan on the social network X, discussing one of the most controversial topics in today’s Western entertainment world.
In a New Year’s message to his followers on X, Pilestedt asked Arrowhead Game Studios fans for their input on what they would like to see in the next game from the studio. He mentioned that he is currently working on the concept and would appreciate hearing fans’ speculations.
One fan expressed the opinion of not adding DEI to games, to which Pilestedt responded that if it doesn’t enhance the gaming experience, it is detrimental.
“If it doesn’t enhance the gaming experience, it hinders it. Games should focus on the pure pursuit of fantastic moments,” replied Pilestedt.
When another fan questioned how DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) could have benefited Helldivers 2, Pilestedt stated, “I don’t like labels. But humanity is united in its extreme xenophobia on Super Earth. #Inclusion, therefore, maybe that’s DEI?”
“I really don’t care. Make good games, don’t make contemporary political statements.”
Impact of Controversial Statements on the Gaming Community
The exchange between Johann Pilestedt and fans regarding DEI in Helldivers 2 has sparked a discussion within the gaming community about the role of social issues in game development.
