The Rise and Fall of Evolve: A Look into Turtle Rock Studios’ Journey
In February 2015, Turtle Rock Studios launched the game Evolve with the support of 2K Games. Despite not achieving the desired results and being shut down before reaching two years of life, the studio still considered presenting a successor.
The Cancelled Project
Prior to returning to zombies with Back 4 Blood, released in October 2021 with the support of Warner Bros. Games, Turtle Rock Studios contemplated producing Evolve 2 to enhance the concepts and try their luck once again in this universe. However, the project was ultimately cancelled.
According to TJ Frame, who worked as an illustrator at Turtle Rock Studios, the planning for Evolve 2 began shortly after the first game’s release. After several months in pre-production, the studio decided to scrap the project to focus on other ideas.
The Road Not Taken
One of the ideas on the table was a cooperative shooter game concept that would eventually evolve into Back 4 Blood. But before that, the plan was to expand the Evolve property.
Improving the graphic quality, creating sequential missions, and implementing new locations on the planet Shear, which was used in the first game, were all part of the plans for Evolve 2.
