Borderlands 4: Technical Analysis
Borderlands 4 was released on September 12th and has already attracted over 2.5 million players worldwide, generating over $150 million, according to Alinea Analytics. On Steam, it sold over 1.3 million copies, equivalent to over $80 million, and on consoles it has already surpassed one million units sold. Shortly after release, the peak of simultaneous players on Steam reached over 300,000.
Player Demographics and Previous Game Experience
A large portion of players are from the USA, both on Steam and PlayStation, followed by countries such as China, Germany, the UK, France, and Canada. Players of Borderlands 4 are already familiar with the franchise: on Steam, 59% played Borderlands 2, 51% played Borderlands 3, and 22% played Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. On PlayStation, where PS Plus helped attract players, 81% played Borderlands 3, 64% played the Handsome Collection, and 50% played Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
Performance Concerns and Future Expectations
At launch, there were criticisms due to performance issues on PC, but Alinea Analytics believes that these will improve with optimizations. Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, commented on social media that some of the issues may be related to players’ PC configurations and even suggested that if they were not satisfied, they could request a refund for the game.
