Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of Elden Ring and president of FromSoftware, said in an interview with PC Gamer that he does not blame players for using guides to complete their games. The interview was given before the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, the first and only expansion of Elden Ring, and addressed the question of whether the development team was aware of the number of players who rely on guides and if that altered their design plans.
Miyazaki acknowledged that most players use guides, but emphasized that FromSoftware continues to strive to satisfy those who prefer to explore games without external help. “Obviously, we understand that players use guides, but we do not make or plan anything with that premise. We try to cater to the player who wants to progress through the game organically. If they can’t, then there is room for improvement and we want to embrace these players more in the future,” he said.
The creator of Elden Ring also mentioned that as FromSoftware games become more popular, the team tries to surprise or challenge experienced players. Some of the bosses in Elden Ring have attack patterns designed to surprise veteran players, suggesting that the design team takes into account players’ ability to overcome challenges through guides and online strategies, but continues to strive to create an authentic experience for everyone.
Regarding the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Miyazaki expressed confidence that when players have progressed enough in the base game to access the expansion, they will be able to discover the secrets and overcome the challenges.
The expansion will be released on Friday, June 21st. In addition, FromSoftware announced that Elden Ring has already sold over 25 million units to date, demonstrating the success of the game.
