The Run: Got Next – A New Era in Sports Games
Play By Play Studios, formed by Electronic Arts veterans, aims to bring a fresh perspective to sports games with The Run: Got Next. Led by CEO Scott Probst and creative director Mike Young, the team is set to offer a 3×3 basketball experience inspired by the NBA Street series but with modern mechanics. Gameplay Innovation
Probst and Young explain that The Run: Got Next is designed to be a fun and accessible game, unlike the realistic simulations dominating the market. The focus is on short and intense sessions, with reactive gameplay and characters with unique abilities. The game, set to release in 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, will have a more affordable price tag, avoiding the free-to-play model.
A New Approach to Sports Games
With a core team of about a dozen people, expanded to 20 to 30 with external collaborators, Play By Play aims to compete by offering an alternative to EA and 2K’s big titles. The goal is to create a more dynamic and engaging basketball experience without the need to follow the strict rules of professional organizations.
The Run: Got Next promises a modern mechanic inspired by games like Rocket League, with fast matches and a focus on online multiplayer mode. The idea is for players to engage in interesting matches in less than five minutes, with an emphasis on a social experience. Additionally, the studio aims to revive the responsiveness of controls from older games, allowing players to always feel in control.
