The highly anticipated release of Cities: Skylines 2 on consoles, initially scheduled for October 2023, continues to be delayed due to technical issues encountered by the developer Colossal Order. The company revealed that the hardware limitations of the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 have made it difficult to achieve the desired quality standards.
Since its launch on PC, the sequel to the popular city simulator has faced criticism due to performance issues in the simulation, leading to continuous updates from the developer. For the console versions, the team mentioned difficulties in optimizing graphic rendering and computational load on processors, especially during intensive actions like placing larger structures in the game.
Although they achieved “playable stability” in internal tests, the necessary adjustments would compromise the visual quality, something the developer does not consider acceptable at this time.
Colossal Order confirmed that they are exploring various solutions with specialized technicians to address the technical problems. However, without a quality model that meets the established objectives, the company has chosen to indefinitely postpone the release to avoid new issues or unrealistic expectations. The main goal remains to provide a robust experience, both visually and in terms of simulation.
Additionally, the developer is preparing a patch for the PC version with performance and interface improvements, while also working on additional content, such as free regional packs. The goal is to restore players’ confidence after the initial lukewarm reception of the title.
