In August 11th, Sony officially ended its presence in Russia by dissolving its subsidiary Sony Mobile Communications Rus. The company had been in Russia since 2006, but in October 2024, it resubmitted the documents to close its operations in the country, something it had already tried to do in 2023.
Sony’s Actions in Response to the Situation:
Back in March 2022, Sony stopped shipping consoles to Russia, closed the PlayStation Store, and donated over 2 million dollars to humanitarian organizations in Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in the early months of 2022. Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Sony Music also ceased operations in Russia in 2022, with a process to gradually close their stores and presence over the last three years.
Impact on Western Companies:
Recent reports indicate that over 60% of Western companies with activities in Russia have shut down their local operations following the invasion of Ukraine.
