The movie Fantastic Four: The First Steps was created with a strong inspiration from the over 60 years of history of this family in the pages of Marvel Comics, but the work of a particular writer had a strong impact, Jonathan Hickman. One of the brightest minds in writing for the Marvel Comics universe worked on the Fantastic Four between 2009 and 2011, in various narrative arcs that had a special impact on Matt Shakman, the director of the upcoming Marvel Studios film. “In preparation for Fantastic Four: First Steps, I delved into the history of over 60 years in comic books. The First Family of Marvel has been continuously cared for by the best and brightest the company has to offer,” wrote Shakman in the preface of Fantastic Four: Solve Everything, a new “Premier Collection” featuring Hickman’s work. “No one shines as brightly as Jonathan Hickman. The humor and heart that I loved as a kid? It’s there and better than ever. The complex dynamics of a family? They become even more interesting when Val and Franklin take the spotlight. And the sense of optimism and wonder? I think the Fantastic Four has never been as fantastic as it is in these pages.” The director says that the magical moments created by Hickman and the dynamics between characters greatly influenced him, a work that ended up inspiring him more than any other when he worked on the film hitting theaters on July 25th.
