Is the End Near for Video Game Consoles?
Shawn Layden, former leader of PlayStation, believes that video game consoles are heading towards irrelevance. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Layden expressed his doubts about the future of proprietary consoles and the possibility of companies moving away from presenting their own hardware.
The Limits of Console Innovation
Layden pointed out that the significant leaps in performance and capabilities between console generations may be a thing of the past. He reminisced about the dramatic advancements from PS1 to PS2 and from PS2 to PS3, but noted that the improvements from PS3 to PS4 and now to PS5 are primarily focused on incremental upgrades in performance rather than groundbreaking innovation.
According to Layden, the current level of technology in consoles has almost reached its peak, with advancements like teraflops and ray tracing pushing the limits of what most consumers can even perceive.
