More than a decade after its original release in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to show extraordinary commercial performance. According to the latest data released by Take-Two Interactive, the game has now surpassed 215 million units sold worldwide. This impressive number is reinforced by constant sales of approximately 5 million copies per quarter, even with huge anticipation surrounding the next title in the series, Grand Theft Auto 6.
The success of GTA 5 is attributed to Rockstar Games’ ability to keep players engaged through regular updates and intense gameplay experience. Additionally, the renewed interest in the franchise, driven by the anticipation of the release of GTA 6, has contributed to maintaining sales of the previous title.
Meanwhile, Rockstar Games released the second trailer for GTA 6, which set a new record by reaching over 475 million views in the first 24 hours after its release on various platforms. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 365 million views in 24 hours, previously set by the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer.
The trailer, captured entirely on a PlayStation 5, showcases a combination of gameplay and cinematic scenes, providing a deeper insight into protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, as well as the detailed environment of Vice City.
The popularity of the trailer also had a significant impact on the featured song, “Hot Together” by The Pointer Sisters, which saw a 182,000% increase in Spotify streams after the release of the new GTA 6 trailer.
Despite the excitement, Rockstar Games announced a delay in the release of GTA 6, now scheduled for May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. The company justifies the delay by committing to deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience, prioritizing the quality of the final product.
GTA 5 continues to be one of the best-selling titles of the past decade, especially in the United States, and Red Dead Redemption 2 also continues to perform well, with total sales exceeding 100 million units.
