Several companies in the video game industry, including Epic Games, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, and Activision Blizzard, have been targeted in a legal process filed in Arkansas, United States, alleging that they are intentionally fostering addiction through video games.
The legal complaint accuses these companies of utilizing “designs, algorithms, and patented marketing with addictive features and technology,” leading to increased addiction to video games, particularly among younger and more vulnerable players.
The allegations include the use of addictive features such as collecting data from minors, employing predatory tactics to generate additional revenue, and implementing feedback loops to keep players increasingly engaged with the game.
Casey Dunn, a mother who has taken legal action against these companies, expressed her concerns, stating, “We never expected that our son’s gaming habits would lead to such severe addiction, impacting his education, friendships, and overall well-being.”
The legal process aims to demonstrate that these companies target children as a lucrative demographic, prioritizing profit over the well-being of their young consumers.
Possible outcomes of the legal proceedings include financial compensation, mandatory design alterations and restrictions on game access, as well as increased resources for mental health support for families dealing with video game addiction.
