Shuhei Yoshida’s Passion for Indie Developers
After leading PlayStation Studios, Shuhei Yoshida spent a lot of time fostering Sony’s relationships with indies. This experience allowed him to acquire important knowledge about the independent side of the industry, which he has highlighted with great affection for many years. His passion for indies has led him to advocate for more attention to be given to Korean indie developers, who are capable of producing high-quality games that go beyond blockbusters like Lies of P and Stellar Blade.
Korean Indie Developers’ Lack of Recognition
In a recent interview, Yoshida expressed his disappointment at the lack of attention that Korean developers receive from Western publishers, despite recent successes such as Dave the Diver and other games. He believes that Korean indie developers possess the same level of talent as Japanese developers but are not receiving the same global attention. Yoshida predicts that it may take another two or three years for Korean developers to gain the recognition they deserve.
Supporting Small Korean Studios
Yoshida argues that global developers should support small Korean studios more, highlighting that currently only Devolver Digital is actively doing so. By providing support and recognition to Korean indie developers, Yoshida believes that the industry as a whole can benefit from the diverse and high-quality games they produce.
