Metaphor: ReFantazio is a highly anticipated title by RPG fans produced in Japan. Although Atlus has stated that this new game is not similar to Persona, their main series, it can’t be denied that it presents a kind of Persona in medieval cosplay. However, veterans will find a design they are already accustomed to, softened and refined to not be so intimidating for newcomers.
### Familiar Personality, but Medieval Fantasy
Metaphor: ReFantazio uses the medieval fantasy setting to explore social, political, and religious hypocrisies of a society torn apart by beliefs and statuses. The focus is on the protagonist, an aspiring king who just wants to save his prince friend and the rightful heir. The narrative follows a familiar path, with engaging characters, captivating environments, and scenarios that immerse players in the events.
### Archetypes Replace Personas in Turn-based Combat
The turn-based combat system in Metaphor: ReFantazio focuses on Archetypes that can be unlocked as you progress through the story or by leveling up relationships with various characters. The system is simpler and more flexible than Persona, allowing any character to equip and progress an archetype. Players can mix abilities from different archetypes, but they must switch frequently between them due to the weakness system.
### The Pressure to Manage Time and Activities is Lesser, but Still Exists
The game retains the pressure of choosing activities and managing time, but it is not as intense as in Persona. Dungeon exploration is restricted to daytime, with nighttime reserved for rest. Players can engage in activities to improve attributes, strengthen relationships, and unlock benefits. The pressure is not as aggressive, providing a more relaxed gameplay experience.
