Microsoft Gaming has once again stunned the video game industry by announcing the closure of four studios, including Arkane Austin and TangoGameworks, a Japanese producer who won a BAFTA in April. After this terrible news, questions started to arise about other projects and teams within the company.
Jeff Grubb, a well-known unofficial source in the industry, was asked about the status of Perfect Dark and whether it could become another controversial release. In his response, Grubb suggests that the project is facing various issues.
“The aftermath of today’s layoffs, I’ve been hearing more and more, I’ve been hearing for years that Perfect Dark is in bad shape, it seems to be in a very bad state.”
“And it doesn’t seem to have evolved much at all since the announcement and Crystal Dynamics came in to help with that,” added Grubb, who even says they are not fully convinced about sticking to the first-person perspective.
Perfect Dark was announced in December 2020 as the first project from The Initiative, an internal studio, which over the years has received assistance from Crystal Dynamics and Certain Affinity in the development. Amid rumors about the transition to Crystal Dynamics as the main developers of the game and the switch to Unreal Engine 5, Perfect Dark remains a project shrouded in mystery.
