Last week, reports emerged that Sony is interested in buying the Kadokawa group, owner of several companies within the Japanese animation and video game industry, including FromSoftware, the producer of Sekiro and Elden Ring. This interest was officially confirmed by Kadokawa itself days later.
Now, Bloomberg reports that this is a courtship that has been going on for several years, which could finally result in a marriage, which has not happened so far due to different perspectives on the direction of the business.
Sony is allegedly interested in buying specific parts of Kadokawa related to the animation and video game industry, while Kadokawa wants a total sale. Part of this is also related to the desire to escape the advances of the Korean group Kakao Corp. that intends to acquire Kadokawa.
Despite many focusing on what this means for the video game industry, the deal could also have a strong impact on the animation and comic book industry, as Kadokawa holds the rights to more than 100,000 animations and comics.
In addition to the possibility of producing video games or movies based on Japanese animations or comics, Sony would have FromSoftware as part of PlayStation Studios, but more importantly, would have privileged access to the talent of Hidetaka Miyazaki, one of the most renowned creators today.
