The Matchmaking System in Battlefield 6
The matchmaking system in Battlefield 6 prioritizes connection quality and time to enter matches over player skill (skill-based matchmaking, or SBMM). This confirmation came from David Sirland, one of the game’s producers, at a time when the open beta of the game is a huge success, with hundreds of thousands of players participating.
Focus on Connection Quality
During a conversation on X, Sirland explained that the main priority of the matchmaking system in the open beta, which will remain the same at launch, is “ping and time to enter the game.” This means that the system tries to place players on servers with the best possible connection and as quickly as possible, rather than focusing on matching players with similar skill levels.
Sirland revealed that player skill is indeed one of the factors considered, but it is “at the bottom of the list.” The reason, according to the producer, is that the larger game modes in Battlefield work better with a varied distribution of skill levels. However, the system does team balancing to ensure that teams remain balanced, even if players have different skill levels.
