Alan Wake 2: A Comprehensive Review After 26 Hours of Gameplay

Alan Wake 2 is one of the most anticipated sequels, promising to immerse players in a new psychological nightmare. The first title in the series, released over a decade ago, captivated with its engaging narrative, dark atmosphere, and intriguing mysteries. Now, with the return of the iconic writer Alan Wake, expectations are high to discover what the new chapter has in store.

This is another journey of suspense and terror, a universe with ramifications far beyond what we can imagine. We have the merging of various worlds, from different video games, with high-quality writing that intertwines each of them in a believable and coherent plot. It’s not always easy to grasp, sometimes I found myself absorbed in contemplation, questioning what was really unfolding, while recalling other works from Remedy Entertainment, such as Max Payne, Control, Quantum Break, and Alan Wake itself.

### The Puzzle’s Construction

The narrative presents small pieces of the past in a sublime way, like puzzle pieces gradually fitting together, making the development of situations intriguing and creating a desire for more revelations. Initially, we take on the role of FBI detective Saga Anderson, who, accompanied by her partner Alex Casey, travels to the iconic Bright Falls in Washington.

It’s an experience that defies description without revealing plot details, serving as the foundation for the mind-bending journey it provides. In this world, we are led by the minds of the characters and even our own, as we try to decipher what is real and what is an illusion, often fabricated by Alan Wake. The search for the ultimate masterpiece, while trying to save those he loves the most, is at the heart of the narrative. Although the story is the central focus, Alan Wake 2 also shines in other areas, with cinematic presentation, stunning visuals, and well-balanced gameplay.

### Inconsistency in Narrative Pace

As the narrative progressed, I was faced with deviations in my perception of unattainable perfection. The game’s pace has some moments that can be criticized, with notably slow parts, particularly when we move on foot, which can feel tedious on longer walks. This affects the immersion that was at an ideal point. Furthermore, certain choices in the story’s progression left me dissatisfied, leading me to consider the possibility of doing things differently, although I understand that this is Remedy’s creative vision. These moments somewhat break the deep immersion I was feeling, seemingly artificially prolonging events that do not perfectly fit into the narrative. This feeling became more pronounced towards the end, when I believed I had reached the epilogue, only to discover that there was more to come, leaving me frustrated because it would have been the perfect ending.

Alan Wake 2 offers a truly unique gaming experience, blending a complex and engaging narrative that challenges players to unravel intriguing details. The game maintains familiar elements from other works, but with Remedy’s distinctive touch, skillfully incorporating aspects from various franchises to create a psychological labyrinth. Nothing is as it seems in Alan Wake 2, and players often find themselves searching for additional information to uncover the mysteries. Even in the final moments, there are still secrets to be discovered.

However, I must admit that at some points during the journey, I felt that some of the magic was lost, which was a bit bothersome for me. There was a noticeable difference compared to the rest of the experience, and I’m not sure if it was done to prolong the game for a few more hours or if it reflects some difficulty in connecting the different moments and narratives, which are numerous and sometimes open to various interpretations.

### Visuals Set a New Standard for Video Games

It’s impossible not to praise the visuals of Alan Wake 2, as they set a new standard in the gaming industry. I can’t remember being so impressed by visuals in recent times. It’s visually stunning in almost every scenario. The Northlight Engine, in its current state, is capable of creating moments that seem worthy of cinema, with impressive visuals that leave us wondering how they achieved such a level of detail. However, this visual extravagance comes with a cost and is not without technical issues.
I delved into the world of Alan Wake 2 on my high-end gaming PC, armed with an RTX 3080, i9-9900k, and 32GB of RAM. Despite my powerful setup, the game pushed my machine to its limits, showcasing the incredible potential of the PC version. By tweaking the settings, lowering the resolution, and utilizing DLSS, I was able to witness the game come alive with breathtaking graphics and immersive ray tracing. However, it’s worth noting that this visual feast comes at a price, as only those with deep pockets can afford the high-performance hardware required for such a stunning experience.

The auditory experience in Alan Wake 2 is equally impressive, with top-notch sound quality that elevates the game to a cinematic level. Every sound, from the menacing growls of enemies to the eerie whispers of the hidden world, blends seamlessly with the visuals and narrative, creating a truly immersive experience that must be experienced to be fully appreciated.

### A Brain Teaser for You

While Alan Wake 2 is undeniably a great game, there are some issues that hold it back from reaching its full potential. Pacing problems in the narrative can make certain moments feel unnecessarily prolonged, affecting the overall immersion. Additionally, the inconsistent performance on PC should have been addressed prior to release. Despite these shortcomings, Alan Wake 2 offers a compelling psychological narrative, stunning visuals, and a rewarding gameplay experience.

– Strong and consistent narrative
– Narrative connections that challenge reasoning
– Excellent visuals that set new standards
– Outstanding sound design
– Robust gameplay that keeps players engaged

However, it’s important to note:

– Prolonged moments that disrupt immersion
– Visual glitches
– Gameplay-affecting bugs
– Awkward inventory management
