Chris Deering, the former president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, spilled the beans that PlayStation, the iconic brand in the video game industry today, wasn’t actually the first choice for the company’s first console.
Origins of PlayStation
In a recent podcast, Deering shared some juicy details about the early days of what we now know as PlayStation. The brand had a completely different name in the minds of key creatives, including Ken Kutaragi, the mastermind behind PlayStation.
The Name Change
Believe it or not, “PowerStation” was actually the original name that SCE wanted. But, due to trademark issues in different parts of the world, they couldn’t use it. So, Kutaragi took matters into his own hands and decided on PlayStation. Despite some pushback within SCE, Deering was immediately on board with the new name. And just like that, trademark problems led to the birth of PlayStation.
