The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – A Missed Opportunity
The game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, developed by the German studio Daedalic Entertainment, did not live up to expectations as a project set in a well-known property. Instead of being a standout example enriched by a fresh perspective, it unfortunately brings to mind rushed adaptations focused solely on timing the release with a Hollywood premiere.
An Ambitious Project with Flaws
Despite Daedalic Entertainment’s 15 years of experience, Gollum appears to be their most ambitious project yet. The transition from point-and-click adventure games to a large-scale action-adventure title may have been a risky move. The game falls short graphically, with numerous bugs, texture issues, poor animations, and awkward character movements. Its linear design takes players to Mordor, but is hindered by mundane and unenjoyable gameplay sequences.
A Disappointing Experience
Playing Gollum feels like a missed opportunity, with occasional glimpses of the intended game design overshadowed by overall execution that falls flat. Despite technical improvements in version 1.3, including resolved errors and checkpoint detection issues, there is still a lackluster and unengaging core design. The studio’s passion for The Lord of the Rings property does not fully translate into captivating gameplay experiences, leaving players wanting more.
Weak Graphics and Animations in Game v1.3
Even with the updates in version 1.3, Gollum still has occasional errors and gameplay segments that are not enjoyable, indicating that the game requires significant polishing to reach its full potential.
