Shōgun Series Production
The FX series Shōgun is now available on Disney+, where you can watch the first episodes of this acclaimed show, recognized as one of the best of 2024 and praised for its recreation of 17th century Japan. However, it is important to note that the series was not actually filmed in Japan.
Challenges and Delays
The production of Shōgun has been receiving accolades since its premiere in 2024, but the planning started back in 2013. For over a decade, efforts have been made to bring Shōgun to the screen, with the FX network even facing the risk of losing the adaptation rights at one point. Fortunately, they managed to overcome these obstacles and move forward with the project.
In 2019, the production plans originally included filming scenes in both the UK and Japan. However, new delays and the COVID-19 pandemic once again caused disruptions. Social distancing and travel restrictions presented new challenges for the production team, leading them to film the series outside of Japan.
You may be surprised to learn that the vast majority of scenes were actually filmed in British Columbia, Canada, with only a few seconds shot in London. Most of the actors traveled to Vancouver to film the spectacular scenes that are now generating buzz.
