The year 2024 started off in a slightly strange way. In the first days of January, rumors from credible sources surfaced about the arrival of Hi-Fi Rush on new platforms, but Xbox Direct and the gameplay of Indiana Jones brought great excitement around the future of Microsoft Gaming and its studios.
As we moved into February, chaos ensued. A rumor about a Microsoft Gaming event, focused on communicating an adjustment to its strategy, sparked speculation that Xbox would become a third-party, with the possible release of Starfield and Indiana Jones, among others, on the PS5.
The main source of the Starfield on PS5 rumor has already admitted that it was all pure fiction and that it’s best to stay calm while we wait for the Microsoft event (the only thing officially confirmed by Phil Spencer). Meanwhile, questions have arisen about a future with Xbox as a third-party.
Throughout this week, Ubisoft was questioned about the impact of Xbox becoming a third-party and Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, was also asked about the impact of this decision.
In the same conversation where he was asked about support for physical format, the leader of the GTA and NBA 2K publisher commented that competition between PlayStation and Xbox is not necessarily a necessity for the video game industry.
“I think it’s a benefit. Do I think it ultimately is a necessity? No. But I think it’s a benefit,” Zelnick said after being asked if competition between the two companies is important for the health of the video game market.
