Insights into Gabe Newell’s Daily Routine
Gabe Newell, the president of Valve, shared a glimpse into his daily life in a unique interview published on Zalkar Saliev’s YouTube channel. Despite still working, Newell admitted that he is “effectively retired” and spends most of his time diving and enjoying life on a boat.
Newell’s Work-Life Balance
During the interview, which has not been released in full yet, Newell talks about his busy routine filled with work and leisure. “I wake up, work, dive, and then work again. Sometimes, I dive again or go to the gym. I live on a boat, so I hang out with the people on the boat. Then I work,” he said. He added that he works every day in his room, as seen in the video footage.
Although he claims to be technically retired, Newell explained that he is still involved in projects that he finds interesting. “When you retire, you stop doing the boring work and start doing what’s more fun. In that sense, I have been retired for a long time,” he said.
Newell’s Ongoing Projects and Views on AI
Discussing the projects he is currently working on, Newell mentioned areas such as artificial intelligence, features for Steam, and even a device to detect pathogens in aerosols. He also expressed interest in brain-computer interfaces, which he described as “incredibly fascinating.”
In another part of the interview, Newell talked about the impact of artificial intelligence on programming. He believes that people without technical backgrounds will be able to leverage AI to become effective programmers, surpassing even those with years of traditional experience.
Despite staying away from the public eye, Newell remains connected to Valve, the company behind Steam, which recently implemented new guidelines for adult content. The full release date of the interview has not been disclosed yet.
