Many players were unhappy with Ubisoft’s choice of a first-person camera for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. However, a representative from Massive Entertainment recently explained why the planet Na’vi is seen from the hero’s perspective.
“We want immersion. We want you to feel immersed, as if you are really on Pandora,” said Ditte Deenfeldt, the game’s director, in an interview with IGN. “It was never really a big discussion for us.”
“We want you to get close to nature, which is, to some extent, the main character of the game. The best way to do that is by playing in first person,” she further explained. However, the first official materials have already revealed that in the game, we will also see the world from the hero’s back, but only when flying Ikran. In this case, the creators focused on the player’s convenience.
“We decided to use a third-person camera for Ikran flight and ground mounts because it allows us to have a better perspective of the world,” explained the game’s associate director, Drew Rechner. “In third person, you can see tons of branches and leaves of trees and all those things that you really wouldn’t see if you were playing in first person.”
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released on December 7, 2023, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Amazon Luna, and Microsoft Windows. We’ve already had the opportunity to try the game, and you can see our impressions here.
