Year after year, the Call of Duty series from Activision is once again presented to players, a tradition that has been maintained for two decades. However, this year there is a different detail: it is the first time that the series is produced under the watchful eye of Microsoft since the giant acquired Activision Blizzard. This change in direction has sparked a wave of hope that Microsoft would still be able to exert its influence on the production to some extent. The idea of a renewal of the Call of Duty series seems closer than ever, giving rise to a collective curiosity about the impact of this new era on one of the most iconic series in the history of video games.
Leadership Change Impact
This change in leadership is unlikely to have affected Activision’s studios much, as they continue to operate under the same creative direction as always – as evident in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 campaign. This campaign maintains the usual formula, with a repeated use of time travel to narrate fictitious events and insert the player into strategic moments. Despite the expectations of innovation generated by Microsoft’s oversight, the new title offers much of the same experience, with some signs of a more substantial revision.
Narrative and Setting
It all begins with a sense of déjà vu: a meeting room where military personnel are interrogated by their superiors about previous operations and everything that went wrong. This very familiar scenario sets the initial tone for the Black Ops 6 campaign, with a presentation that seems sterile and lacking new ideas. The repetition of this strategy suggests that Activision’s studios are still stuck in old narrative structures, perhaps even hostages to a model that proved effective in the past but now lacks creative daring. Under Microsoft’s supervision, it was expected that the title would innovate at least in its narrative structure, but Black Ops 6 seems to only recycle formulas, without presenting a significant renewal for the campaign.
Game Mechanics Diversity
The base serves as the operations center from which each mission is launched. The missions stand out for their great diversity: some are slow and require careful investigation, while others are intensely action-focused. There is also an interesting mix, with some unfolding over a considerable period of time, with various approaches that allow for organic evolution. However, the execution of these missions is not uniform; the quality varies greatly. Some follow usual formulas, resulting in predictable and unchallenging experiences, while others have moments of genuine fun, especially in sections that provide more freedom and incorporate elements of horror.
I do not intend to reveal details that spoil your experience, but it is important to mention that the campaign presents a deliberately diverse construction of the playable proposal. This variety can sometimes create a sense of abundance, but on the other hand, it may lack authenticity and its own identity. Nevertheless, some missions stand out for their good construction; if they were more extensive and produced in greater depth, the content could be considerably richer. It is worth mentioning that all missions can be repeated in order to complete additional challenges or accumulate money.
Spy atmosphere and dynamism
One feature that pleased me was the feeling of being inserted into a James Bond movie, with a dynamism that transports us to well-constructed moments. This atmosphere is created through intriguing dialogues, the use of creative devices, and even a certain charm that runs through the interactions. This combination of elements allows for a better reproduction that captures the dynamics of a spy narrative, giving the impression that the player is part of a stimulating and stylish mission.
Although there are some good ideas in the campaign, the final stretch proves to be surreally strange, with a very marked decline in quality. The experience, which initially mixes refreshing elements in the style of James Bond with a dynamic of action and war, ends up deviating towards an alternative reality full of bizarre events. The revelation of the villain also stands out as a weak point, lacking consistency in its execution. Although the premise is plausible, the monotonous way in which the outcome is presented, along with uninteresting gameplay elements, undermine the positive aspects introduced this year in the single-player aspect.
Unfortunately, Black Ops 6 once again stumbles upon recurring problems, such as artificial intelligence, which is often limited and comical. This weakness of AI truly provokes discomforting reactions, compromising immersion during missions. Additionally, I cannot fail to mention the graphics, which, although well-presented in cinematics, fall short in gameplay sequences. While this graphical approach allows the game to be compatible with older consoles like PS4 and Xbox One, I believe it is time for the franchise to make the leap to a more current and ambitious visual standard.
