Baldur’s Gate 3: The Bear and Vampire Meme
Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a huge success with critics and audiences, selling 2.5 million units in early access and breaking records on Steam.
A few weeks ago, a scene was shared that showed a sexual relationship between a bear and a vampire – who is actually a druid transformed into a bear – and it went viral. Now, the game director has explained how this meme spiraled out of control to the point where even his own son couldn’t escape.
Larian Studios boss, Swen Vincke, recently revealed to PC Gamer that his own son, who presumably had little to no direct involvement in the entire bear sex scandal, was mercilessly “trolled” by people sending him bear photos.
“My son comes to me and says ‘dad, people are sending me bear pictures from everywhere,'” he said. “I wasn’t ready for that. I could hear him saying ‘Yes, I KNOW!’ [to the people calling him].”
In the same interview, he also shares a bit more about that scene:
“We wanted a scene that people would talk about, but we wanted to show that this was a cinematic game, with characters that had depth. The bear is obviously a druid and he has a story. He’s been around for hundreds of years. He lived with bears for part of his life too, so that’s where the bear thing comes from. It’s interesting when you start to think about it, what it meant for him to live with bears, right? Because there are also horny bears in the world.”
