The Colossal Order has confirmed that the release of Cities: Skylines 2 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will not happen before summer and there is still no set date. The studio continues to work on optimizing the game, but acknowledges that there are still technical difficulties to overcome before delivering a satisfactory version for players on consoles.
Performance Issues Lead to Delay
Originally, Cities: Skylines 2 was supposed to launch simultaneously on PC and consoles in October 2023, but performance issues led to the delay. Colossal Order explained that they were able to make the game “stable and playable” on consoles, but at the cost of a significant reduction in graphic quality, something the team deemed insufficient for a release.
Ongoing Challenges in Development
On PC, where the game was released over a year ago, the situation is also not completely resolved. Performance and simulation systems continue to face criticism and the studio has encountered technical difficulties in developing the custom asset editor, a tool eagerly awaited by the modding community.
Continued Work Towards Quality Standards
Without a new concrete forecast, Colossal Order states that they will continue to work towards achieving the desired quality standards before announcing a release date for the console versions. They emphasize their commitment to providing reliable information when closer to a release-ready state, ensuring that Cities: Skylines II is brought to consoles in the best possible form.
