EA clarifies crossplay in Battlefield 6
So, it turns out that Battlefield 6 doesn’t have a console-only mode, as some might have thought. When crossplay is turned off, players are only matched with others on the same platform (PlayStation with PlayStation; Xbox with Xbox).
What went wrong?
The confusion started after an interview published by IGN, where designer Matthew Nickerson explained how crossplay works and basically said that “crossplay only for consoles happens if you turn it off.” This was interpreted as the existence of a mode that only brings PS and Xbox players together, excluding PC.
Later, during a capture event, EA clarified the concepts: with crossplay enabled, the system tries to prioritize console players when forming lobbies and, if necessary, fills them with PC players. With crossplay disabled, there is no mixing between different platforms, meaning there is no official option that gathers only PS and Xbox players, excluding PC.
Practical implications
So, if a group wants to play between PlayStation and Xbox without PCs, simply turning off crossplay doesn’t guarantee that, as it isolates each platform. If the goal is to avoid PC players in the same session, the matchmaking system with crossplay enabled prioritizes consoles but may still include PCs if needed to fill the lobby.
