Yoko Taro, the genius behind the NieR series, is well-known for his eccentricity and unique approach to adult themes in Japanese creations. Despite the unexpected twists in NieR games, one of Taro’s ideas for the NieR: Automata anime was actually left out.
In a recent interview with Yoko Taro that was translated into English, it was revealed that Taro had initially written a sex scene between 2B and 9S for the anime adaptation as a way to differentiate it from the game. However, this idea was ultimately rejected.
Taro believed that the anime was too similar to the game, which he found puzzling since he thought fans were expecting something fresh from the anime. He mentioned, “We decided to strike a balance between elements from the game that worked well and incorporating some original scenes for the anime.”
Takahisa Taura mentioned that the anime producer wanted to stay faithful to the game, while the game team wanted to introduce some changes, creating a dynamic situation. However, they were taken aback by what they called the “9S incident.”
Taro had written a sex scene between 9S and 2B in the script, but the anime producer decided to remove it, stating that “9S doesn’t engage in sexual activities.” Taro explained that concerns about fan reactions to the scene led to its deletion, as the team respects the fans and believes the game belongs to them. They understood the producer’s perspective and the reasons behind removing the scene.
