This week’s DF Direct is dropping a little earlier due to a hectic week for us, kicking off with a look at the Black Myth: Wukong benchmark tool. The creator didn’t share any footage of the PlayStation 5 version initially, but a short gameplay clip recently surfaced on the internet, giving us a glimpse of what to expect.
Image Quality and Performance
The images from PlayStation China, although a bit blurry due to compression artifacts, show that the game targets 60 fps. However, there are noticeable frame rate drops during intense scenes. We can’t draw many conclusions without knowing how the clip was captured and what settings were used, leaving us with more questions than answers.
Frame Generation Speculation
Despite the low quality, there are hints of AMD FSR 3 frame generation in the images. The accordion strobe effect and edge artifacts suggest some form of frame interpolation. The UI animation at half speed further hints at this technology being used, raising questions about its presence in the final game.
Performance Testing and Expectations
Using Digital Foundry’s “Frankenstein’s PC,” a console substitute system, we ran Black Myth: Wukong at 4K resolution with FSR and TSR upscaling. The performance mode provided a decent boost in frame rate without compromising visual quality, showing promising results for the PS5 version.
Insights and Anticipation
While the benchmark results are intriguing, we need to take them with a grain of salt as the final game may differ. Running the game on a substitute system gave us a taste of what to expect in terms of performance and visual fidelity, setting our expectations high for the upcoming release.
