Glen Schofield, the mastermind behind Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol, is facing a tough time finding funding for his next big project. In fact, he’s starting to wonder if he’ll ever return to the world of video games.
The Struggle for Funding
After leaving Striking Distance Studios, Schofield has been hard at work brainstorming new game concepts. One idea, which he collaborated on with his daughter Nicole, caught his eye and he felt confident enough to pitch it to publishers. Unfortunately, no one was willing to take the risk.
A New Sub-Genre of Horror
Describing the project as a new sub-genre of horror, Schofield and his daughter created a prototype with a small team and shopped it around to various publishers. Despite interest, no one was willing to invest more than $10 million, leaving the $17 million budget out of reach.
The End of an Era?
With publishers asking them to slash the budget to $2 million, Schofield and his team had to face the harsh reality that their vision might never come to life. While he may be stepping away from AAA development, Schofield remains committed to creating art and writing stories. It looks like the days of directing video games may be over for him.
