Mike Ybarra’s Defense of Consoles
Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra argues that consoles are not going to die, in what appears to be a subtle jab at his ex-employer Microsoft Gaming in a recent message shared on the social network X.
Ybarra decided to respond to praise for PlayStation, written by Timdog who commented on how Sony tries to make its console relevant to the living room by creating exclusive content that sparks the desire to purchase it, contrasting with the current stance of rival Microsoft Gaming.
The former Blizzard leader and ex-Microsoft Gaming executive chose to praise PlayStation. In a second message, he seems to indirectly address Microsoft.
“If your strategy is to win the living room, you need exclusive hits because winning is a platform and games perspective. Sony knows how to create hits and how to choose hits from others to make them exclusive. If I were them, I would double down as blood in the water is everywhere.”
When asked about the idea that the living room is not the future and consoles are dying, Ybarra responded that narratives are adapted according to needs.
“I think those losing strength are the ones whose narrative serves them. In my opinion, consoles are not going to die.”
