MachineGames and the Challenge of Launching Games on Game Pass
MachineGames, a subsidiary of Bethesda Game Studios and therefore part of Microsoft Gaming, now faces the reality of having its games debut on Game Pass, the subscription service owned by the Windows creator. This has a significant impact on the production and launch planning of their games. Jens Andersson, director of design on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, explained that entering Game Pass means that a large number of curious players will try the game.
Accessibility and Player Engagement
In a recent conversation with The Game Business, Andersson noted the challenges of producing games that will debut on Game Pass. He emphasized the need to cater to both players familiar with Indiana Jones and those who are not. With many children who have not seen the movies being introduced to the franchise through the game, MachineGames aimed to make this their most accessible game to date.
Andersson further highlighted the importance of creating a strong and engaging experience for players, especially considering the behavior of Game Pass users who may quickly move on from a game. Striking a balance between engaging new players and satisfying those who play through to the end is a key focus for the studio.
