Immortals of Aveum: A Strong Foundation with Notable Flaws

Immortals of Aveum is the latest offering from EA Originals, a game that promises to whisk players away to a magical and mysterious realm filled with epic challenges and thrilling adventures. Developed by Ascendant Studios, an independent studio made up of industry veterans, it took five years of hard work to create a unique action-packed experience that combines a captivating narrative, innovative mechanics, and a rich magical world to explore.

The heart of Immortals of Aveum lies in its engaging and cinematic narrative, which immerses players in a magical realm full of secrets. Players step into the shoes of Jak, an “Immortal” with the ability to manipulate different colors of magic, each with its own unique powers. Despite growing up without powers in the streets of Seren, Jak is thrust into the role of a hero who holds the key to a brighter future. As he becomes embroiled in the ongoing war for magical dominance, Jak must uncover the mysteries of Aveum’s past to secure a better tomorrow.

Exploring the World of Aveum

Aveum serves as the backdrop for the game, a world embroiled in age-old conflicts and battles for control of magic, known as the Everwar. Amidst this turmoil, two powerful kingdoms, Lucium and Rasharn, stand at odds with each other, separated by the Rift, a deep chasm that divides the realms. Tasked with investigating the conflict are Jak and the elite order of Immortals, on a mission to unearth Aveum’s hidden secrets and shape the course of the future.

With a focus on an immersive narrative, the game seamlessly blends cinematic storytelling with spell-based combat. The first-person perspective, reminiscent of FPS games, presents players with a unique gameplay experience. However, the abundance of magical options available may prove overwhelming, as mastering different combinations to overcome challenges can be quite daunting.

Diving into Combat and Customization

In Immortals of Aveum, the magic system offers an array of options for players to customize their combat styles. With over 25 spells and 80 talents to choose from, players can tailor their skills to suit their playstyle and strategic preferences. Each color of magic – Red, Blue, and Green – comes with its own set of abilities, allowing for diverse tactical approaches in battles and puzzle-solving scenarios.

By strategically utilizing the various colors of magic, players can adapt their strategies to suit different situations, creating unique combinations to tackle enemies and challenges. While the color system adds depth to gameplay, its implementation may pose a learning curve for some players, particularly when navigating the game in first-person mode on consoles like the PlayStation 5.

The diverse range of magical abilities adds excitement to the gameplay, allowing for strategic decision-making in different scenarios. Choosing to focus on a single color or exploring multiple options adds a sense of customization to the gameplay. However, introducing enemies with specific weaknesses can sometimes detract from a single-color progression.

Examining the mechanics of Immortals of Aveum reveals some noticeable obstacles and imperfections. Certain movements lack fluidity, impacting the overall experience. For example, Chain jumps feel clunky and Dash/Blink is often interrupted by pauses. The lack of fluidity in movement during intense combat moments could have been improved with different design choices. Comparing it to the smooth and dynamic movement in Doom Eternal highlights the potential for enhancement in Immortals of Aveum. The difficulty in playing with a controller is also evident, with chaotic battles and slow response times compared to using a keyboard and mouse.

The visual presentation on PlayStation 5 is a disappointment, despite the use of Unreal Engine 5 and Nanite technology. The game appears to have low resolution and visual imperfections, impacting key moments like cinematics. The overall visual experience is marred by blur, defects in image quality, and frame drops, detracting from the intended splendor.

Looking ahead, Immortals of Aveum lays a solid foundation for a potential sequel. The variety of spells and gameplay mechanics offer enjoyment, despite some rough edges like character movement. With improvements in fluidity and overall gameplay experience, future ventures could enhance the game’s engagement and enjoyment. The combination of a captivating narrative, humor, and a plethora of playable options make Immortals of Aveum a promising title with room for growth and exploration in a potential sequel.
