James Gunn’s Vision for the DC Universe
James Gunn is promoting the release of Superman, the first film in the new cinematic universe from DC Studios, created in collaboration with Peter Safran. Gunn emphasizes that this is just the beginning of a series of films within a universe that also includes live-action and animated series.
Managing Expectations
Gunn doesn’t want unrealistic expectations for Superman and gets uncomfortable when people talk as if the success of this movie will determine everything. When asked about the pressure of people saying that the future of DC Studios depends on Superman, Gunn replied, “It’s not my truth. My truth is that this is the first film from DC Studios. Others may say, ‘it has to be a home run and nothing else.’ I think, ‘no, I would be perfectly happy with a double.’”
Creating a Piece of the Puzzle
Gunn mentioned that they have Peacemaker, Supergirl, and other projects in the works. He emphasized the importance of making a film that people enjoy and feel connected to the characters. Gunn stressed that it’s just a movie and not the entire puzzle itself. He mentioned that he hates seeing articles solely focused on problems and pressure for the director, as he is only a part of the efforts. “If we recoup the money spent, I’ll be very happy,” he concluded.
