The recent job offer posted by Sony, seeking a Senior Director of Account and Multiplatform Management with clear responsibilities to bring PlayStation Studios games to external platforms such as Xbox, Steam, Nintendo, and mobile devices, sparked a surprising leak of information. The job description also mentioned the need to develop a global business strategy for titles outside the PlayStation ecosystem, focusing on increasing profitability and franchise reach.
Player reaction was swift, with not all fans receiving the idea positively. Several PlayStation fans began sending emails directly to Sony seeking clarification on the multiplatform plans. Some of these emails received responses. While the content of the company’s message was generic, it is worth noting that Sony decided to respond. In one of the quoted responses, the company stated: “As we continue to explore new ways to grow and evolve the gaming ecosystem, we are committed to preserving the unique identity that PlayStation represents.”
Regarding live-service games, the plan seems to be moving towards direct release on multiple platforms. The most obvious example is Helldivers 2, set to arrive on Xbox Series X/S on August 26, 2025, with full cross-play functionality.
While there are no clear signs of a complete strategy change yet, the signs are accumulating. The wave of releases, official statements, and responses to player emails reveal that Sony is looking for ways to expand the reach of its games, especially service-based games, without compromising the image it has built with its narrative exclusives.
