Netflix’s Adaptation of Last Samurai Standing
Netflix is preparing to adapt Shogo Imamura’s manga, Last Samurai Standing, into a live-action series. The announcement has garnered significant interest from viewers, with Kaata Sakamoto, head of Netflix Japan’s content, describing the show as a blend of “Shogun and Squid Game.” This upcoming Japanese production is expected to be a standout on the streaming platform.
Exploring Samurai in a Changing Era
While samurais are often romanticized for their glamorous past, Sakamoto highlights a different perspective. Towards the end of the Edo period, these warriors faced a decline in prestige and influence. Last Samurai Standing delves into the scenario where Japan’s once revered warriors are thrust into ordinary roles, struggling for survival in a changing society.
A Thrilling Game in Meiji Japan
Set during the Meiji era, the series follows Shujiro Saga as he participates in a high-stakes game at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto. Joined by 292 skilled competitors, Saga competes to secure a substantial cash prize by stealing wooden pieces and reaching Tokyo. His motivation stems from a desire to protect his family. Last Samurai Standing is expected to premiere on Netflix in November 2025.
