The new zombie mode in GTA Online not only brought a fitting theme for the Halloween season but also revitalized the player base, which continues to grow. With the release of the Ludendorff Cemetery Survival mode, Rockstar Games aimed to create a nostalgic experience by placing players in the North Yankton setting, a significant location from the GTA V story mode.
The appeal of the mode lies not only in the familiar context but also in its survival mechanics in the form of waves against zombies, something that had not been explored in depth in the GTA Online universe.
The community’s quick adoption of the event was impressive. In less than 24 hours, over 400,000 players participated, representing a 270% increase compared to the previous mode, Assault on ATT-16, launched in August 2024.
With the initial goal of eliminating 80 million zombies surpassed in just two days, Rockstar increased the target to 800 million deaths, an ambitious goal that further stimulated participation. As a reward, in addition to the initial items like the Orange Glow skeleton suit and the Red Hooded Skull mask, players now compete for new rewards such as the Purple Glow and Green Glow skeleton suits, which are unlocked as the new goal approaches.
The growing popularity of the mode can also be attributed to the lack of other survival modes in the game, making this temporary event particularly appealing. The community has shown great enthusiasm, not only for the mode itself but also for the variety of cosmetic rewards that add a unique touch to their in-game characters.
This event demonstrates the ongoing success of GTA Online, which, even after more than a decade, manages to reinvent itself and keep its player base engaged with new content and seasonal events.
