Kohei Horikoshi, the mangaka responsible for My Hero Academia, revealed an unexpected Western inspiration for his work, the second movie in the Terminator series. In addition to mentioning that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, and Goku from Dragon Ball were inspirations, Horikoshi stated in an interview with Viz Media that Terminator 2 inspired the way he approached the presentation of characters who used One for All before All Might.
“My Hero Academia” Progress and Future Plans
Horikoshi mentioned that he has detailed stories for the previous inheritors of One For All that he intentionally left out of the main storyline. When asked if he will draw these stories, he replied that he prefers to leave suggestions of these elements rather than depict all the well-thought-out stories and episodes.
He drew inspiration from Terminator 2, where John Connor becomes a leader in the future, and Schwarzenegger’s character is sent from that future. With not many scenes depicting the future in detail, viewers’ imaginations expand, which Horikoshi found to be a great storytelling technique. Therefore, he wanted to create something similar to Terminator 2 for My Hero Academia.
Currently, My Hero Academia is in chapter 428 of the manga, with volume 39 set to be released in October. The anime is on Season 7, with the final episode scheduled for August 3rd, and the movie “You’re Next” will premiere in early August in Japanese theaters.
