Neil Druckmann’s Decision to Step Back
Neil Druckmann has decided to take a step back from his direct involvement in the day-to-day operations of HBO’s The Last of Us series starting from the third season. This decision was made before the script preparation phase began, as the studio is also working on the new project Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Changes in Responsibilities
Although Druckmann won’t be handling regular writing or directing duties, he will still play a high-level supervisory role to ensure that the new season maintains the same narrative fidelity as the first season, which he considers the “gold standard” for video game adaptations.
Craig Mazin will now be the sole showrunner of the series, taking on the responsibility of creative coordination and production direction. Halley Gross, who was also involved in the creative process of previous seasons, will also have a reduced presence moving forward.
