Netflix’s Approach to the Future of Gaming
Netflix is making strides in the gaming industry by focusing on interactive games for Smart TVs, aiming to broaden its audience reach without requiring additional hardware. Alain Tascan, president of Netflix’s gaming division, shared in an interview with The Game Business that the company’s strategy involves removing barriers that deter potential gamers, such as high console prices and the need for multiple controllers. Netflix is even experimenting with a subscription model that eliminates additional costs for select games like Squid Game: Unleashed.
Redefining Gaming Consoles
Tascan also touched on the evolution of gaming consoles, suggesting that the future of gaming may not revolve around traditional devices like the PlayStation 6. He highlighted the use of smartphones as controllers, which eliminates the need for specific accessories. The upcoming “Netflix Game Controller” app for iOS and Android allows users to play games on their TV by connecting to their mobile device. While consoles remain relevant, Netflix is paving the way for a new era of gaming that prioritizes simplicity and connectivity across various devices.
