The Capcom is reviving many of its most beloved intellectual properties, an effort that is generating a lot of excitement among its fans, who are eagerly looking forward to the new phase the Japanese company has entered.
Okami fans will be thrilled to hear about the unofficially named Okami 2, a sequel in the works that will be using the RE Engine, which has received much praise for its use in the Resident Evil games.
Kiyohiko Sakata, a producer at Machine Head Works, shared with IGN (thanks Gamingbolt) that they are assisting Capcom and Clovers from Hideki Kamiya in this project using the Reach for the Moon engine.
According to Sakata, Machine Head Works has extensive experience supporting Capcom, as well as collaborating with Kamiya, and they also have experience working with the game engine being used in this project, the RE Engine. Clovers, on the other hand, lacks experience with the engine, so they are receiving valuable assistance.
Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Okami and director of the sequel, added that the “RE Engine is famous for showcasing the best of the games they have. Very, very good in terms of expressiveness. So, we believe that people also expect the RE Engine level of quality for this game.”
Even though the vision for Okami 2 is very specific and artistic, the RE Engine has been used in games like Resident Evil 4 remake, Street Fighter 6, and even in open worlds like Dragon’s Dogma, showing its high versatility. Especially because they want to create a very unique visual style in this direct sequel.
This information was confirmed by Kamiya himself, who acknowledges the love for Okamiden, but in his mind, the plan was always to create a direct sequel to the original Okami. That’s why they will promote the game as a direct continuation of Okami, recognizing the existence of Okamiden, but still being related to the original.
Amaterasu is back as the protagonist, and there will be references to characters from Okamiden, but Kamiya warns that the project is still in its early stages and will take many years to be completed, so you’ll have to wait a long time for more concrete details.
