The film industry is drowning in mediocrity, according to acclaimed director Ridley Scott, known for classics such as Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator. In a recent Q&A session with fans, Scott expressed his belief that Hollywood is currently focused on quantity over quality, leading him to prefer watching his own films instead of current releases.
Scott stated, “I find mediocrity nowadays, we are sinking in mediocrity. So, what I do, it’s a horrible thing, but I started watching my own films and actually, they are very good! Plus, they don’t age.” Reflecting on his work, he marveled at movies like Black Hawk Down, questioning how he achieved such feats. While acknowledging that some good films do emerge, Scott critiqued the current landscape by stating that most films made today are subpar, with special effects often being used to mask weak scripts.
Despite his criticisms, Scott did note that around 5% of modern films are fantastic, 10% are good, and approximately 40% are passable. This perspective on the industry’s current state sheds light on the challenges faced by filmmakers in an era dominated by commercial considerations.
