Upcoming BioShock Movie to be Based on First Game
Producer Roy Lee has confirmed that the upcoming film adaptation of BioShock will be based on the first game in the series. In an interview with The Direct, Lee stated that “it is definitely based on the first BioShock game,” and that the team prefers to keep many details under wraps for now.
The project is still in development with no set release date: according to Lee, the script is “being worked on” and director Francis Lawrence will only begin work on the film after completing the next installment of the Hunger Games saga (set to be released in November 2026), pushing the production of BioShock to a later date.
Choosing to adapt the first game will bring the screen to the underwater city of Rapture and the narrative centered around Jack, a survivor of a plane crash who arrives in the city and uncovers its secrets. This is said to be the core narrative that the film intends to follow.
Challenges of Bringing BioShock to the Big Screen
The creators are aware of the complexity of adapting the game for film (the director has already described it as “complicated”) and have been tweaking the script to try to balance fidelity with feasibility of execution.
