The Gaijin Entertainment team, behind War Thunder, revealed that the PS5 Pro has the potential to handle path tracing, a more demanding technology than normal ray tracing. However, the key issue lies in whether it can maintain performance over time. The team has been working on global illumination path traced (PTGI) on PC since the Leviathan update, but adapting it to consoles presents a new challenge. Despite the PS5 Pro’s powerful graphics, success hinges on how the game engine operates and the available GPU resources. Optimizing the PTGI prototype proved to be a real challenge, involving fine-tuning performance, reducing noise, and ensuring stability. Gaijin is focusing on implementing ray tracing on consoles first, with plans to introduce new technologies like Shader Execution Reordering (SER) and Opacity Micro-Maps (OMM) to improve efficiency, especially in complex environments. Updates are expected early next year, alongside support for AMD FSR4 for upscaling and frame generation. PTGI is currently being tested in Enlisted, with plans to officially support path tracing in the Dagor engine later this year. Source.
