PlayStation 6: Possible release without Blu-ray disc drive
The PlayStation 6 could potentially be launched without a Blu-ray disc drive, following the example set by the PS5. This decision is believed to be linked to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s goal of cutting costs.
Separately sold drive for the PS6
According to Insider-Gaming, a reliable source that previously leaked information about the PS5 “slim” and the PS5 Pro ahead of their release, SIE is getting ready to offer a separate drive for the PS6. Tom Henderson has heard from multiple sources that consumers will have the option to purchase the console with the drive, without the drive, or to buy the drive separately.
It is said that the disc drive successfully met Sony’s internal targets, prompting them to adopt a similar strategy for the upcoming generation. This move is reportedly aimed at reducing production and shipping costs to retailers.
Additionally, rumors suggest that the PS6 will boast a simpler design, optimized for efficiency, to occupy less space and weigh less. This streamlined approach is expected to result in cost savings during the transportation of units to stores.
