Romero Games Fires Employees Working on Unannounced FPS Project
Romero Games has announced that it has laid off all employees working on a new FPS project that hasn’t even been announced yet. In an official statement, Brenda Romero revealed that the studio “discovered that the publisher canceled funding for the game along with other unannounced projects at other studios,” revealing that Microsoft Gaming was the “major publisher” they were working with.
Industry Veterans Let Go
The studio is currently evaluating next steps and trying to support the team, made up of industry veterans with over 20 years of experience. Romero Games is also reaching out to other companies to find openings for the affected employees.
Impact of Microsoft Layoffs
Former employees of Romero Games have shared on social media that they were laid off as part of the recent wave of layoffs at Microsoft. The studio was working on a larger project, an FPS utilizing Unreal Engine 5 to showcase their ambitious vision. Unfortunately, they were among the more than 9,000 employees affected by Microsoft’s recent layoffs.
