The Controversy Surrounding Life is Strange: True Colors
The production company behind Life is Strange: True Colors, Deck Nine, and Square Enix are currently embroiled in a controversy regarding accusations of toxicity within the studio and a hostile approach from the publisher towards certain creative decisions in the game’s narrative.
Accusations of Not Respecting Inclusivity Values
A recent investigation by IGN, as reported by Eurogamer, has revealed that several current and former employees of Deck Nine have criticized the company for not upholding the inclusivity values that the Life is Strange series is known for. However, the harshest criticisms have been directed at Square Enix.
Allegations Against Square Enix
Sources claim that individuals at Square Enix London were described as “thugs” who exerted immense pressure on Deck Nine staff, leading to a toxic work environment. One of the main issues was reportedly Square Enix’s resistance to revealing the protagonist Alex as bisexual before the game’s release. The publisher allegedly only reconsidered their stance when feedback was positive and warned Deck Nine not to market Life is Strange as “a gay game.”
Deck Nine’s Response
In response to the allegations, Deck Nine stated that they are committed to promoting diversity in their games, treating all employees fairly, and telling stories that focus on marginalized groups. However, former creative director Zak Garris has been accused of resisting diversity efforts within the narrative team and allegedly forcing the removal of a transgender character from True Colors. Garris defended his actions by claiming that the narrative team was unprofessional and unwilling to compromise, putting the game at risk of cancellation.
