The Disappointment of Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaws is a title for which Ubisoft had immense expectations, but its performance fell short of the desired outcome, something that the company believes is related to the current state of the Star Wars franchise itself.
The Impact of Star Wars’ Reputation
Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, admitted to the company’s investors that this ambitious project did not meet expectations, largely due to the declining prestige of the Star Wars name in the world of entertainment.
Guillemot mentioned “several issues” that prevented Star Wars Outlaws from becoming the desired success, with its technical problems being less significant compared to the franchise’s low popularity affecting its performance.
“First, it was hurt by being released at a time when the brand to which it belongs was in an unstable state. Additionally, the game had some aspects that still needed polishing, which were addressed in the first weeks, but it hurt sales.”
The Future of Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaws improved after updates and has already received two expansions that introduced new gameplay features, but the damage caused by its initial state prevented it from achieving more, especially as the Star Wars brand remains controversial.
Since the 2017 film The Last Jedi and the 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker, the Star Wars franchise has divided the fan community due to creative choices that altered the overall landscape of this universe, while recent Disney+ series have further complicated the brand’s reputation.
