After the spectacular reveal trailer for Gears of War: E-Day, a perfect conclusion to the thrilling Xbox Games Showcase, the game found itself at the center of controversy when Geoff Keighley praised the CG created with the help of Blur Studio, which bothered a Blizzard employee.
Keighley commented that the spectacular video was created with the assistance of Blur Studio, using materials built in Unreal Engine 5, the engine being used to develop Gears of War: E-Day. However, it was not captured in real time and is not even an exclusive work of The Coalition.
Blizzard’s Jamir Blanco was upset by this and criticized Keighley’s words, as they diminished the effort of The Coalition, which he considers “a real-time work of art using in-game assets and ray tracing lighting in the same engine in which the game runs.”
In response, Keighley did not back down and shared the clarification provided by The Coalition to GameSpot, stating that “the trailer was made in collaboration between The Coalition, Blur Studios, and GNet using in-game models, textures, environments – all captured in Unreal Engine 5. It was not captured in real time, as some suggested.”
The trailer is undeniably impressive, but this way The Coalition dispels any doubts about the work done.
Statement from Microsoft:
The Gears of War: E-Day trailer was made in collaboration across The Coalition, Blur Studios, and GNet developed using in-game models, textures, and environments – all captured in Unreal Engine 5. It was not captured in real time as some have suggested.
